Sonnet 2-The Emancipation Proclamation

Amidst the hostility of 1863,
Lincoln declared all slaves free.
In a divided nation,
Crowded with Underground Railroad stations,
Slavery was abolished,
The abuse demolished.
Halfway through the war,
Lincoln’s “four score,”
Brought completion to the previous declaration
That made the U.S. a nation.
Though the Civil War had two years to go,
This bold statement shifted focus to the true foe.
No longer would slaves toil unwillingly all day,
Never to receive pay.

This poem was written as a tribute to one of my favorite presidents, Abraham Lincoln.
