Daddy's Womb | Teen Ink

Daddy's Womb MAG

April 23, 2008
By Anonymous

i asked my father if i could swim,
and he said that i would drown.
The Sea would imprison me – he said
if my feet had left the ground.

So i walked out to the water,
and cried out – how ’bout now!
He said, a little bit further, Son,
and then you’ll leave the ground.

i stepped on sand then stone,
from hollow ground to sturdy.
The sky was at my level as I
gazed at the birdie.

The Sea brought me a new idea,
the urge to flee to the high.

i asked my Father if i could fly,
and he said, sure, Son – go try.

i jumped as high as i could.
Still, i landed on the ground.
i saw my Father pull on a chain,
then i knew that i was bound.

*life isnt about pretending to be something you're not. It about being who you are and finding someone
who loves every bit of it."

"Life's tradegy is that we get old too soon and wise too late"

Thats great critical thinking...I agree.

Wow, that could go on to a great debate..anyway, you both have good points. Personally, I liked the poem because I understood why the dad had the kid on a "chain". It was because he loved his son and wasn't ready to let him "fly" . Yet I sitll agree with what you said sarah.

"I think that most of us, anyway, read these stories that we know are not "true" because we're hungry for another kind of truth: the mythic truth about human nature in general, the particular truth about those life-communities that define our own identity, and the most specific truth of all: our own self-story. Fiction, because it is not about someone who lived in the real world, always has the possibility of being about oneself. "
— Orson Scott Card

I think that would be a metaphorical chain to keep him from flying.

...Ok I don't get it, when you said your dad pulled on a chain and you were bound... does that mean your father had you on a chain??? If so that is so so wrong.

seriously, that last comment made no sense. you need to reread that statement and change a few things. thank you.

Believe it or not, there is actually a few more lines in the poem. So...........................................................................................................................................................................................

if you get rid of that line, i don't think it will be the death of the poem.
